CHANGE IS EASY
Yes, change is easy. The first step is to ‘be’ in the moment. But how?
The thought of changing our life can be daunting – it is leaving the comfort of how we know things and enjoy the way we are. But this first step to change from how it is now, into the way you would love to live life, shows how easy it is. We will go through change, step by step, using nothing else but what we already have.
As a yoga teacher I am always talking about ‘being in the moment’. But what does that really mean? ‘Being in the moment’ is something that often belongs to the yoga teacher but not to us.
We all have projects we are working on. Or want to work on. Whether it be changing our weight, eating healthier, stopping an addiction, being able to sleep better, letting go of a past grievance, getting off anti depressants, making more money – achieving something just out of reach is something we all aspire to…
In our mind we decide what we need to do to change but days come and go and things stay the same. Somehow the right time never seems to happen. We are creatures of habit and habit is the easy way for our brain along the line of least resistance. So time passes and we continue along the same groove we always have. Our mindset is the same.
STEP ONE- FOCUS ON BREATHING
Become aware of your breathing. This is handy because breathing is a tool kit that is always with us. Start change (whatever you need to change) by doing the following for a week – make it a focus and stay with it. Trust me on this one.
Notice as you breathe in through your nose. Instead of ‘taking a breath’ – notice the breath as ‘life force energy’ you receive. Stop, close your eyes and feel how magical it is. If you don’t believe me, stop, close your eyes and hold your breath. When you can’t hold your breath any longer – now close your eyes and feel how magical your breathing is!
Slow your breathing down.
See the breath coming in through the crown of your head, down the front of your body to the soles of your feet and up the back of your body -see it forming an eternal oval of energy.
Keep watching your breath move in and watch the breath move out of your nostrils as warm air and move back into the universe. Focus on making the breath as complete, long and smooth as you can. As you breathe out watch your shoulders drop down from around your ears.
Notice your thoughts. Notice them and then bring your focus back to your breathing (slow, complete, long and smooth). Don’t try to suppress or change thoughts. Just watch them and come back to your breathing.
If you forget to notice your breath for a day or so, when you do remember, get back into it. Keep going. Use your god given ‘breathing’ tool kit.
Too simple? Yes, another of life’s paradoxes.
Remember, we are not ‘trying’ to change anything yet. We are bringing our focus into the moment through our breathing. Do this for a week.
Remember you have nothing to lose, you are doing something you do anyway, but it is life changing to use your breathing to be ‘in the moment.’
