Birds of Worry and Care

That the birds of worry and care fly above your head, this you cannot change; but that they build nests in your hair, this you can prevent. (Chinese Proverb) Yes! Very true, but how can we stop worrying and reacting to everything that happens. Modern life’s message would probably be to take a chill pill; an anti-depressant. Pills are often a quick fix, needing little input from us and often disregard side effects of the drug. If we acknowledge that we have continual thoughts every day of our lives, we know that thoughts play a big part in our life. Yogis call our mind – a monkey mind – chatter,...

We learn when we are ready

We learn when we are ready As I reflect this week, I am reminded how attitudes can disharmonise our energy flows. It was a busy week, but all was going well, then I had distressing news about a close relative. It was something that I was powerless to change or help with, but deeply saddens me. Then I got a lung infection. In the art I study – ‘Jin Shin Jyutsu’ attitudes disharmonise our organ energy flows and depths. Sadness and grieving disharmonise the lung and large intestine energy flows. I obviously didn’t work through my emotions and they settled in my body. The organ sheds the tears the eyes...

Dame Denise L’Estrange-Corbet’s Interview

I was reading about Dame Denise L’Estrange- Corbet in the Herald this morning. Upon reading the article I pondered how incredibly individualistic she is and how  ‘World’ is too. Dame Denise L’Estrange- Corbet has stayed true to herself and her philosophy has continued through her business and now she is being recognised for who she is. I don’t know much about the fashion industry, although I had a distant encounter with Dame Denise L’Estrange- Corbet more than 20 years ago. My daughter, Marie was studying textile design at Victoria University. She designed hand-dyed chunky, oversized woollen shrugs and approached World to buy them, which they did. I remember how supportive, kind and caring Dame...

Sri Lankan Ayurvedic Resort Visit

Arriving in Sri Lanka From the time we arrived at Colombo, Sri Lanka at 2am this morning I feel a sense of excitement being in the home of Ayurveda. For the next 7 nights my dream of experiencing a week’s panchakarma in an Ayurvedic Resort in Sri Lanka is coming true. (A panchakarma is a time to chill out, focus on restoring good health and detoxing. It is usually done at a change of season. Spring is the optimal time and autumn also a good time.) However, it should be for 10 days to 3 weeks and I am here for 7 days. Barberyn Ayurvedic Resort Barberyn Ayurvedic Resort is...

A book review: Becoming the Shape of the Chair You Sit In by Barbara Mawson

I recently bought this book online after a client recommended it. And I am pleased I did. Barbara is a physiotherapist who has had a lifetime of results working in the area of spinal pain. It is a self-help book and is full of information, good sensible ideas with some humour and lots of tips for daily living – all easy to read. Great to see a few yoga asana in there too. After 40 years of working as a physiotherapist she certainly comes from a position of knowledge and wisdom. Lovely to see a NZ author with such powerful messages to share for all of us to prevent and...

No Jet Lag?

Yes, it is true – Jin Shin Jyutsu really works and it is easy to do if you don’t want any jet lag after a long haul flight. During a plane trip from London to Auckland via Hong Kong I held each of my fingers and thumb gently. When I wasn’t eating there wasn’t much else to do except watch a film or snooze so it was easy to hold my fingers. And no jet lag. What do I need to do to avoid jet lag? Hold your thumb gently and relax. Soon you will feel a gentle pulse in each hand. Move on to holding the index finger, then...

New Me New Year

2017                                                                                                                                                                                    2016 numerologically is 9. The number 9 is about endings. So we are into a new 9 year cycle in 2017. Now is a great time to reflect on the past 9 years and refocus for the next 9 years ahead. We are already well into our first month. I wonder if you are serious about changing all that which didn’t work for you last year – because if we keep thinking the same way, we will get more of the same. This is fine if you are happy with your life as it is, but if it was a hard year with lots of stress, or you would...

We Can Create Heaven on Earth

We can create heaven on earth… This is one of my favourite parts of the book ‘Karma for Today’s Traveller’ Floating in water. The pool represents our mental world. Every thought/intention we have sends waves out into this pool. All of these waves taken together, along with echoes of our old waves, form our mental environment. If we fill our mental environment with angry waves, then that is where our mind lives, seeing angry waves everywhere. Similarly if we use our mind wisely and compassionately, we will find our pool becoming clearer and more beautiful. The vista we see will be something to   behold. Our mental environment is up to...

How our Feet Help us to Earth

Our feet not only support us, they are conductors of energy for our body. This is known as ‘earthing’ or ‘grounding’. Just as the sun gives us warmth and vitamin D, the Earth underfoot gives us food and water, a surface to walk, sit, stand, play, and build on, and an eternal, natural, and gentle energy. Think of it perhaps as vitamin G—G for ground. Why is earthing important? Maybe the difference between feeling good and not so good, of having little or a lot of energy, or sleeping well or not so well. You can’t see the Earth’s energy. For this reason it is usually disregarded, but just because...

What Happens When We Get Sick – 6 Stages of Illness

What Happens When We Get Sick?  With proper diet and lifestyle, medicine is of no need. With improper diet and lifestyle, medicine is of no use (Ayurvedic Proverb) When we get a cut we put a plaster on it, expect it to heal and it usually does. Our body is always healing and protecting itself. But if our body is out of balance, eg. being stressed, tired or not eating well, or through our attitudes –our body can’t focus on healing itself as it would like because it is busy dealing with the stress etc. These imbalances cause the body to be overwhelmed and can eventually lead to disease. Sometimes...
